Innovation and Technology Solutions (ITS) provides outstanding IT services and facilities and enables excellence in their use, across the University’s three UK-based campuses, and our international campuses & partner institutions. Our services range from underlying infrastructure technologies, provision of a modern Media Centre, to digital skills training for staff and students. Our vision is of a University where students and staff are provided with the digital tools and processes to enable excellent Education and Research.

The post holder will be a Software Developer with key responsibilities for the University’s data exchange architecture and the curation of all our data.

Duties of the Role

This new post, sitting within the Software Development group, will be responsible for developing technical solutions that guarantee the accurate exchange of data between the corporate systems in use at the University. This includes both commercial and in-house developed applications. The majority of these data exchanges occur between MS SQL servers, but there are a growing number of WebAPI interfaces and a desire to move towards an Enterprise Service Bus architecture, which this role will have a responsibility for shaping.

You will have a strong understanding of the importance of data quality and an ability to liaise with data owners to understand data and correct data quality issues. You will ensure that the data held within our systems complies with the University’s information management policies and is GDPR compliant. You will also be proficient in documenting data flows to a high standard, and serve as a nexus of experience for others in the section.

A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the job pack.

Skills and qualifications required

The post is on the University’s grade 8 but appointment at grade 7 will be considered with support to development to grade 8.

The successful candidate will hold an honours degree or equivalent level qualification or equivalent relevant experience. The successful post-holder will be inquisitive, methodical, and forward-looking with a keen eye for detail and a methodical approach to diagnosing and fixing errors. You will have knowledge and experience of SQL query programming, shell scripting (preferably DOS), and of working in the .NET framework (preferably .Net core) using C#. With all round ICT skills, a self-motivated practical approach to problem solving and integration systems development, you will have excellent communication skills enabling you to communicate effectively to a wide audience of differing levels of technical understanding.

A full list of the Essential and Desirable criteria for appointment at the different grades can be found under the Person Specification of the job pack.

The University is clear in its commitment to individual contribution and to ensuring people are able to work in ways that suit them best within the limits laid down by the University and by their role.

Remote and/ or flexible working will be considered.
